SkillsSA Subsidised Training in South Australia — Eligibility, Costs, How to Check
The SA government pays most of the course fee for eligible students studying subsidised qualifications at AISC. Who qualifies, what you'd actually pay, and how to check in 60 seconds.
Most adults looking at a Diploma in the care sector see the fee and close the tab. Here’s the thing many don’t know: if you live or work in South Australia, the state government may pay most of that fee for you.
The program is run by Skills SA (part of the Government of South Australia). At AISC, it can bring a $8,250 Diploma of Mental Health down to $900 for eligible students. Same course, same trainers, same nationally recognised qualification.

What is SkillsSA subsidised training?
Subsidised training is where the South Australian Government pays part of your accredited course fee. The money goes straight to your training provider — you never handle it. You pay the remaining student contribution, which is a fraction of the full fee.
It exists because South Australia has workforce shortages in specific sectors — health and care among them — and the state funds training in qualifications that lead to that work.
Am I eligible?
Skills SA sets the criteria, not AISC. As at July 2026, you may be eligible if you live or work in South Australia and you are:
- an Australian citizen, or
- a New Zealand citizen, or
- a permanent Australian resident, or
- the holder of an eligible visa (Skills SA publishes the full list — it includes several skilled-regional, partner, humanitarian and bridging visa subclasses).
Adult learners also need to be 16 or over and not enrolled at school. (AISC’s own courses require you to be 18 or over at commencement — that’s our entry requirement, separate from the subsidy rules.)
One rule that surprises people: right now, prior qualifications don’t lock you out. Skills SA currently allows access to subsidised training regardless of your training history — though your highest level of education may affect some situations, so it’s worth confirming. You can even undertake two subsidised courses at the same time.

What would I actually pay at AISC?
Three of AISC’s four nationally recognised qualifications currently have SkillsSA-subsidised places for eligible students:

Eligibility and subsidy amounts are determined by Skills SA. Subsidised places are subject to availability and program conditions, and the program can change.
What’s the catch?
Honest answer: there are conditions, and you should know them before you get excited.
The subsidy doesn’t cover everything. Before starting a workplace placement you’ll need clearances that aren’t included in any course fee — a National Police Check ($25–$65), First Aid certificate ($100–$200), an NDIS Worker Screening Check if your placement involves NDIS participants, and immunisations as required by the host organisation.
Subsidised places aren’t unlimited. Skills SA funds a set number of places. When they’re taken, they’re taken — the program can also be paused or its rules changed by the government at any time.
Eligibility is checked properly. You’ll complete a Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) assessment and a pre-enrolment interview before any funding is confirmed. That’s not red tape for its own sake — it’s how the program makes sure you’re set up to finish what you start.
It’s a subsidy, not a shortcut. The course is identical to the full-fee version — same units, same placement hours, same assessment.
How do I apply?
- Take the 60-second eligibility check. It asks the threshold questions — age, SA residence or work, citizenship/visa status.
- Talk to admissions. Our team calls you back — usually within 24 hours — to confirm your situation, answer questions, and check course fit.
- Complete the enrolment form and LLND assessment. This is where eligibility is formally verified.
- Start with the next available intake. AISC runs rolling intakes throughout the year, so you’re never waiting for a distant semester. Your earliest start date depends on the qualification and pathway you choose.
What if I don’t qualify?
You’ve still got options — this isn’t a dead end.
- Fee-for-service with a payment plan. Diploma fees can be spread across 7 instalments; Certificate-level courses across 3. Nobody pays $8,250 in one hit unless they want to.
- Financial hardship support. AISC has fee-deferral and hardship arrangements — see our Student Support and Wellbeing page or just ask admissions.
- Other funding programs exist. Not every subsidy runs through Skills SA — Fee-Free TAFE places and other assistance are listed on the Skills SA financial assistance page.

Frequently asked questions
Is SkillsSA the same as Fee-Free TAFE?
No. Fee-Free TAFE is a separate program. SkillsSA subsidised training applies at approved private RTOs like AISC as well as TAFE SA — the government pays part of your fee at whichever approved provider you choose.
Does the subsidy affect the qualification I receive?
No. You receive the same nationally recognised qualification as a full-fee student. Your testamur doesn’t mention funding.
Can I get subsidised training if I already have a diploma or degree?
Currently, yes — Skills SA’s present rules allow access to subsidised training regardless of prior qualifications, though your highest level of education may be relevant in some cases. Confirm your situation at skills.sa.gov.au or through the AISC eligibility check.
I’m on a visa. Am I eligible?
Possibly — Skills SA publishes a list of eligible visa subclasses including permanent residency visas, several skilled-regional and partner visas, and some humanitarian and bridging visas.
